Family Sponsorship and it's Options

Family Sponsorship is a program that allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their family members, including spouses, common-law partners, children, parents, grandparents, and other eligible relatives, to become permanent residents of Canada. Sponsored family members can live, work, and study in Canada, enjoying many of the same rights as Canadian citizens. There are several categories under the Family Sponsorship Program, each designed to facilitate the reunification of different family members in Canada:

  • Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship
  • Dependent Child Sponsorship
  • Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
  • Orphaned Siblings, Nephews, Nieces, or Grandchildren Sponsorship
  • Other Relatives Sponsorship

Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship

The Spousal and Common-Law Partner Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to come to Canada as a permanent resident. There are two types of applications under this category:

    - Inland Sponsorship: This is for spouses or partners who are already living in Canada with their Canadian sponsor. Applicants may be eligible for an open work permit while their sponsorship application is being processed.
      - Outland Sponsorship: This is for spouses or partners who are living outside Canada. Applications are processed through a visa office that serves the applicant’s country of residence.

Dependent Child Sponsorship

The Dependent Child Sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their biological or adopted children to become permanent residents of Canada. To be eligible, the sponsored child must be under 22 years of age and not have a spouse or common-law partner. In certain cases, children over 22 years old may qualify if they are unable to support themselves financially due to a physical or mental condition.

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. Sponsors must meet specific income requirements and agree to provide financial support to the sponsored relatives for a period of 20 years. This program is highly competitive, with a limited number of applications accepted each year.

    - Super Visa: For those who are not selected for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship program or prefer a more flexible option, the Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for extended periods. The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that is valid for up to 10 years, allowing stays of up to two years at a time without the need to renew status.

Orphaned Siblings, Nephews, Nieces, or Grandchildren Sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents may also sponsor their orphaned siblings, nephews, nieces, or grandchildren under the Family Sponsorship Program. To be eligible, the sponsored relative must be under 18 years of age, unmarried, and orphaned (both parents deceased). The sponsor must prove they can financially support the sponsored relative and meet other eligibility requirements.

Other Relatives Sponsorship

In certain circumstances, Canadian citizens or permanent residents may sponsor one other relative, regardless of age or relationship, if they do not have any other eligible family members to sponsor. This option is rare and requires the sponsor to meet specific criteria and demonstrate that they are alone in Canada and have no other family members who could be sponsored.
